TRASH

May 31, 2007

It seems like everyday there is a need to empty the trash can at my residence? Which started me thinking about what would happen if the weekly trash disposal service were to stop? It would be frightening—This happened last night and this morning I came across this article in the Times about Napoli’s rubbish problems. It is worth reading.

337 Project » Salt Lake’s Attempt to Integrate ‘Art’ Into the Community—at Least for a Little While

May 8, 2007

106.jpg

This post was originally supposed to be serve as announcement about an upcoming art project 337 Project Which opens May 18th in Salt Lake City, but instead I feel like a pre-critique must be placed on the project. My comments are by no way intended to injure or offend the organizers of this project, instead I hope they make artist in general question what it means to create and really what are the goals that should be strived for. This pre-critique will cover three main things I have problems with—including: What the project communicates beyond the individual artist messages, The complete lack of an Objective, and third No spaces between words.

Afraid of Art/Artist But Don’t Want to Be Seen An Artophobe

Everyone has seen graffiti at some point in their life, yes even if you live in provo. but whether you view it is as art or nuisance depends on your education, background, or relationship to the property where it is present. I could keep going on this but this topic is better reserved for another article about graffiti. Instead I want to point out the convenience of this project with regard to it being in and around a building scheduled for demolition. The message being portrayed from this
is one that says art is frivolous. That statement, and this project are doing more to injure art than any spray-paint-vandal, or fascist regime ever could. The injury comes in the form of an accepting of the idea of Trial Runs or Safe Art. This idea of—I’m willing to let you “artist” create something, since I’m going to throw it away anyway—is not alright and devalues not only the individual artist but the art community in general.

Even the Non-Objective Artist had an objective

In our art starved region of the west this project illustrates just how many artist and how few patrons there are. 114+ plus artist who are desperately seeking recognition, voice, or simply something to fill their time with. I fear that this push with no real objective or theme will either a. turn the 337 into a craft fair featuring street artist, or b. create something that resembles a train wreck.

Your Voice is Stronger With Good Type

Perhaps this is case of hypocrisy, but then my site is really only read by 3 people and not meant to serve as a community invite, but the website 337project.org could be better. And as it appears that it will last longer than the actual building perhaps added emphasis into the website would be a better investment.

With all this said I’m really excited for them to open the doors on the 18th and prove me wrong

I invite everyone (all three of you who read this blog) to make an effort to be there on the 18th, unless you live in texas for example. The opening event should be a lot of fun and I’m interested to see if they truly changed the building into something that’ll compliment Art or grossly represent visual vomit attempting to call it self art.

When there is nothing to write about one has to make something.

May 4, 2007

“Are you handicap?” the lady in the blue moo moo ask me when the door slides open? It is late, I’ve been deathly ill and I’m still not feeling well, so my response may have been some what delayed, “Well if you Aint Handicap then your car is up stairs!” the rest of the room declares in a less than friendly tone. I back away somewhat frightened, somewhat apologetic that was when I noticed the sign seats 140- 175 upstairs.

When I finally sat down in an unoccupied seat I may have finally come to terms with the idea that 11:59 really isn’t the most magical time to leave a train station. A The train station, if you can call it that, in SLC really wasn’t much more than some parked cars a temporary building housing a few rows of discarded airport chairs with cracked and stained vinyl peeling from center, and chain link fence. I believe I was actually heading back to my auto when the conductor called out All Aboard! then confronted me head on and said “You board over here sir”— which I took to mean “if you go that way you are wuss, bock, bock, bock”. So telling myself that I was no chicken I boarded the train which leads you back my opening paragraph.

Currently I’m sitting in a friends loft in San Francisco high over Market Street and I’m really grateful I made the trip. I have so much more to write and promise to do so at the beginning of next week. I just wanted to give you all an idea of what I was up to and push down some of the older boring post.

A True Alternative to BYU’s Alternative Commencment

April 26, 2007

Well if you live in Utah County or Read a Utah based newspaper, you may have heard about a contrived controversy about Vice Presidents Cheney’s speech planned for today at Brigham Young University commencement. I’m extending an alternative to the alternative. If you’re looking for something to do and are feeling visually unstimulated (yes this is a calculated battle in my war on the banal) May I suggest visiting your local university’s art galleries. This is the time of year when the Graduating seniors exhibit the culmination of their years of study. Of course I’m biased as a graduate of the visual arts, but in reality no other degree has the same readily accessible visual evidence of hard work. While the average student walks in cap and gown to pomp and circumstance to symbolize their achievement, the Artist places their work on exhibit for the benefit of the viewer.

Congrats to the many grads especially those in the field of Visual Arts.

On Rock Concerts and The Vernal Equinox

March 23, 2007

The calendar read Vernal Equinox and I had scratched down TVOTR above it, today was going to be great, and it was. Wednesday in celebration of the equal hours of sunlight vs daylight I met up with a friend to go to the TV on The Radio concert. This is one of my new favorite bands, and as I braved the scabies factory that is “In The Venue” my esteem for them increased. They put on an excellent show complete with driving rhythms, great lyrics, and all around Rock Star energy. By the end of the show my back, eyes, and ears hurt something fierce and as I drove home the constant ringing in my ears sent me reminiscing to the days when evenings like this never even phased me. Even though I felt older, the added sacrifice of going to these shows brought along a greater appreciation for the music and show.

I’m looking forward to the next show —not at “in the Venue” though, that place is a hole.

Now Two days later I’m fully recovered and ready to venture out and enjoy increasing warmth/daylight. Oh and special thanks to Kevin, Marc, and Luke who do a great job reminding me that life isn’t always about music and films, but can be about bikes and families to.

I’ve been waiting for this album since January when I purchased it from iTunes. I was expecting great things from one of my favorite bands and as I’m listening to it right now I super impressed. There are only a few songs which I rate with five stars in my itunes library and this album already after one time through has a disproportional amount of them “Simply the Best Album Ever”. Buy your copy today, and I recommend getting the limited edition, I wish I would have. Modest Mouse Music Dot Com

Peace is Possible

March 8, 2007

From the request of a friend I downloaded Jimmy Carter’s latest book Palestine Peace Not Apartheid I strongly recommend this book especially to those political leaders in Israel who seem to be the largest stumbling block to peace. The Author provides a great history about the region its people and their history and plight as only someone who held such a high political position could. As I said before I have the audio version, but I feel more inclined to recommend the print version. Jimmy Carter is a great speaker but I grew tired of his voice as he recited his thoughts. The book left me believing that a solution was possible!, but immediate action is required — Lets make a push for the people of Palestine!

Many Thanks to Medieval Islamic Culture

Among the thousands of things that I have to be grateful for here is one that just made recent news. Decagonal and Quasi-Crystalline Tilings in Medieval Islamic Architecture It is always good to receive a reminder like this — a reminder about the great things societies from the past have been able to accomplish.

Three Climbers and A Dog

February 20, 2007

Growing up in the nineteen-nineties I seem to remember a lot of films that used this simple mathematical formula (4 and 1, 3 and 1, Bill and Ted) to create interesting titles , so when I happened across this NYT article I had to read it.
