A Monday I Missed + Blessed Are The Cheesemakers

April 10, 2007

Cochran’s Produce

I’m not sure where I was on monday, but I believe I missed it somehow making my Tuesday feel more like the first day of the work week. Normally this would be considered a bad thing, two mondays in one week, however this wasn’t the case. By the time I realized that it was tuesday—this happened when I realized my favorite grocery store, Cochran Produce, had no bread on the shelves. The bread is delivered everyday except Tuesday and Thursday. Oh well i thought to my self I guess I’ll change my dinner plans, this is when I picked up a couple tomatoes, some asparagus, a lime and a couple pears. As you can tell I had no idea what I was going to make but they all looked so delicious. After I had paid for my bill I started discussing cheeses with the owner. This is when I realized that by missing monday the week was going to be great. We walked over to the shelf with a large assortment of local cheeses when I became introduced to a small wedge of Gouda wrapped. Gouda has never really been my favorite cheese, but the my interest was perked in this one do the “traditional” process used to create it. When I got home the first thing I did was to unwrap the small wedge, once it was open I took out the cheese knife, but I hesitated I couldn’t simply tear into this beautiful piece of art. Running down stairs I grabbed my camera and thought to myself this will make a nice blog entry, then I went back upstairs and photographed the cheese. After I had my photo I indulged myself in the smooth pleasant taste of authentic Gouda. Mmmm I’m salivating right now as I type.
Gouda

Once I had eaten I carefully wrapped what was left of the cheese and placed it to the refrigerator. I add the word carefully because this is really how I was treating the food—like a small treasure. After I had finished dinner I felt so good, there is something really nice about buying local maybe it is the connection to actual people or it could be that those places typically care more about quality than say a whole foods or Wal Mart and they are the kind of places that’ll keep their doors open for you. Wait I think Wal Mart and Whole Foods never close, but that is really another topic to be discussed later.
Let me get back to enjoying the thought of a 4 day work week.

Should you decide that you’d like to try out some delicious cheese might I recommend these local outlets. Bee Hive Cheese Co & The new one where the featured Gouda came from Rock Hill Cheese
