A True Alternative to BYU’s Alternative Commencment
April 26, 2007Well if you live in Utah County or Read a Utah based newspaper, you may have heard about a contrived controversy about Vice Presidents Cheney’s speech planned for today at Brigham Young University commencement. I’m extending an alternative to the alternative. If you’re looking for something to do and are feeling visually unstimulated (yes this is a calculated battle in my war on the banal) May I suggest visiting your local university’s art galleries. This is the time of year when the Graduating seniors exhibit the culmination of their years of study. Of course I’m biased as a graduate of the visual arts, but in reality no other degree has the same readily accessible visual evidence of hard work. While the average student walks in cap and gown to pomp and circumstance to symbolize their achievement, the Artist places their work on exhibit for the benefit of the viewer.
Congrats to the many grads especially those in the field of Visual Arts.

Just So You Know They Are Having A Sale On Meningitis Immunizations
April 24, 2007I guess It had never occurred to me that vaccines were handled the same way as last years fashions. This has me wondering if my recent purchase of 100+ dollars worth of vaccines is going to leave me with buyers remorse when the CCD announces its version of the iphone for Meningitis. Is the next version going to not only prevent swelling of the meninges but also play mp3s. oh well I got a real sweet deal on mine, and I’ll be content if I never get sick again—from anything.

How do you know you’re getting older
April 20, 2007While the above statement should be pretty obvious (based on the fact that everyday you’re one day older) this topic has occupied a large portion of recent conversations with friends and I’d like to share one observation with you.
Every morning after stepping out of the shower and drying my hair I look in the mirror and think I could cut a pretty cool mullet. At the same time but before grabbing my razor I think maybe I won’t shave over my lip today—The area that would be occupied by a mustache is always the last to receive shaving cream. In the end I usually end up walking out of the washroom with neither a mullet or a mustache, yet I’m tempted daily to completely overhaul my identity. Maybe it is wisdom, or age that keeps me from creating the mullet or the mustache, maybe it is fear that while it would be fun to have both for a few days, what if it stuck. What if instead of stepping out of the shower and thinking about cutting a mullet it was reversed and daily I had to make a decision to not cut off the mullet.
Realizing that with each day it becomes harder and harder to change I’m grateful that my teenage years are gone, even my early twenties are gone—those were really the best identity forming years. I’m going to consider it a blessing that I never had a mullet —though a bowl cut isn’t far from it— and wasn’t able to grow a mustache. I’ll embrace getting older as life seems to be increasing less complex and daily decisions become easier and easier to make.

A New T-shirt + Another Band to Love (A Concert Review for Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin)
April 18, 2007
Monday evening while randomly checking the shows that where coming to Kilby Court I realized that one of my new favorite bands SSLYBY(Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin) was going to play Tuesday. So giddy with excitement I happily purchased the 9 dollar tickets and went down to the show. This also provided a chance to get down to Sette Bello Since I had just begun to listen to SSLYBY only a few weeks ago I was excited to determine if my infatuation with them was little more than a new album crush or if they were a legitimate band that could earn spot on my “top rated bands” a list that any band should feel proud to be on, seeing how I’m the only reader.
After the Pizza from Sette Bello we made our way west to Kilby Court, The Opening band Neon Trees provided a less than stellar performance, though I have to give them credit for trying to be Rock Stars. I really wasn’t into him standing on the Amp and Screaming “push push push push push me over the edge”. But they were a great opening band and did what they should have set up quick and took down even quicker.
Opening with “I am Warm and Powerful” I knew I had not made a mistake. From there on the show was brief but well put together. And this band from Missouri proved to be really entertaining, including a round of everyone lets trade instruments and keep rocking! If you ever get a chance to see them I strongly recommend them, and hopefully we’ll hear more from them.

Sometimes late at night I image myself being a mean cut throat journalist who critiques cord changes, originality, vocal harmony. Then I realize I’m not an expert and my review of a band is really a review of my night and after a good meal and time with friends I realize I’m not that cut throat journalist. Instead I’m the guy cheering for the underdog and hoping so much that the bands I like will make it big, but when they do I play them less and less. so take this review from that point of view

Revisit»To this Marvelous Invention
April 12, 2007
KDay introduced me to this the City Hideout last year, and I feel it is time to revisit it. I absolutely love the idea and need to get my hands on one. I believe in the west bow hunters call these blinds, but those aren’t nearly as neat as a non-lethal urban friendly one. you can purchase yours from oooms
