On Rock Concerts and The Vernal Equinox

March 23, 2007

The calendar read Vernal Equinox and I had scratched down TVOTR above it, today was going to be great, and it was. Wednesday in celebration of the equal hours of sunlight vs daylight I met up with a friend to go to the TV on The Radio concert. This is one of my new favorite bands, and as I braved the scabies factory that is “In The Venue” my esteem for them increased. They put on an excellent show complete with driving rhythms, great lyrics, and all around Rock Star energy. By the end of the show my back, eyes, and ears hurt something fierce and as I drove home the constant ringing in my ears sent me reminiscing to the days when evenings like this never even phased me. Even though I felt older, the added sacrifice of going to these shows brought along a greater appreciation for the music and show.

I’m looking forward to the next show —not at “in the Venue” though, that place is a hole.

Now Two days later I’m fully recovered and ready to venture out and enjoy increasing warmth/daylight. Oh and special thanks to Kevin, Marc, and Luke who do a great job reminding me that life isn’t always about music and films, but can be about bikes and families to.

Paul Rand on Design

March 22, 2007

That graphic design is generally considered a minor art has more to do with posturing than it does with reality. The paucity of great art is no more prevalent among designers than it is among painters. To be sure there is a basic difference between graphic design and painting. But that difference is one of need and does not preclude consideration of form or quality. It merely adds more stress to the normal difficulties entailed in producing original work.

I’ve been waiting for this album since January when I purchased it from iTunes. I was expecting great things from one of my favorite bands and as I’m listening to it right now I super impressed. There are only a few songs which I rate with five stars in my itunes library and this album already after one time through has a disproportional amount of them “Simply the Best Album Ever”. Buy your copy today, and I recommend getting the limited edition, I wish I would have. Modest Mouse Music Dot Com

Tonight We Eat Flowers and Wait for People Who Are Hot

artichoke1.jpg

Three days in one, The weather in the Western United States has been unseasonably warm creating a magical unusual feeling of summer; my employers are prancing around their offices in spring attire, the rivers are flowing, the street vendors have doubled in force, and there appears to be an abundance of really good looking people out and about.* These topics also seem to be weighing heavily on peoples minds as it seems to occupy the bulk of conversations these days, people who’d normally tell you about the latest thing they’ve read are instead commenting about their excellent lunch they had while sitting outside, they stress outside several times in the course of the conversation. I’m not complaining about this phenomena I’m probably more guilty than anyone, instead I just wanted to write about the strange, but seasonally appropriate behavior—For example tonight rather than my usual dinner that consist of something from either my favorite restaurant I ate the flower of the artichoke plant simply because I felt like something different. It was lovely I might add.

Another interesting event that has added to the peculiar summeresque atmosphere is the forest fire burning only a few hundred meters from the home where I’m staying. It was strange to crawl into bed last night and see the red glowing embers from my window which is normally pitch black. I remember thinking I should be more concerned about the fire than I was, but instead I simply opened my book Visible Signs and fell asleep reading it. I hope everyone is enjoying the spring as much as I am, even though my wardrobe isn’t ready for spring.

*I didn’t know about the good looking people phenomena, until two of my friends, who happen to be really good looking themselves, pointed this out to me last night at dinner. Now I just have to pull myself away from work so I can begin to enjoy this latest phenomena more.

An Okay Review For Factory Girl

March 13, 2007

Yep another short post about yet another movie. I saw this film last week and I’ve been trying to decide if I liked it or not. What I have concluded is that it was just okay, really depressing, and worth your time. A mixed review yes. The film tells the story of Edie Sedgwick ultimately ending in with her death caused by a barbiturate overdose. As you can imagine the film is a real downer caused by watching this unfold. Depressing yet worth your time—especially if you’ve ever watched one of Andy Warhol’s films. And in the least you’ll come out learning a lot about her. If you don’t plan on watching the film at least visit the wikipedia page, there you can see the same dim details about her life and you won’t have to spend 10 bucks.
